Match Reports

Result: Thomas McCurtains 1-6 1-10 Cuchulainns

Cuchulainns first hurling match of the season saw us face the Thomas McCurtains in the Ronan Cup at Goodmayes in East London. We got a good new squad together for this season with a lot of good new players joining our more seasoned players. We had 19 lads out for this one and everyone got a good run out.

The game started at a good pace with Cuchulainns getting in our stride early with a couple of good points in the first 10 minutes. At this stage we were beginning to dominate the midfield area with Crunchie and Joe Cashman doing some sterling work winning and distributing the ball up front. There was also great performances from our entire defencive unit which included Padraig Kavanagh, Pat Nugent, Mike O’ Malley, John Brady, Kieran Graham, and a superb display from Tom Brennan at Centre Back who dominated that area of the field time and time again with some great catching of the sliotar from high balls.

By now Cuchulainns were well in our stride giving our opponents very little in the way of scoring chances and when we added a goal before the break we went in at half time 1-6 to 0-2 to the good, the goal coming from the stick of Damien Holohan, one of our new lads from Co. Laois.

Into the second half, Cuchulainns continued to dominate the game in the midfield and our own half-back line – and although we added a few more points, scores were hard to come by with a few chances going a begging. Nonetheless, despite having a couple of goals disallowed we still found ourselves 1-9 to 0-3 ahead with just 10 minutes remaining. Thomas McCurtains staged a mini-comeback towards the end putting over 3 points from frees, and scoring a goal, also from a free. The final score in the end was a great win for the Cuchulainns by 1-10 to 1-6 – Cuchulainn Abú!

Junior Championship Semi-Final (20-08-2011)

With a place in the County Final of the Junior Football Championship up for grabs, CuChullains played Tir Chonaill Gaels (TCG) in Ruislip on Sunday 21st August. When the final whistle came CuChullains had booked their place in their third final in four years with a convincing win.

The game started with TCG making two sharp attacks which ended in wides. For the next ten minutes both teams looked nervous with bad passing and shooting. CuChullains finally opened the scoring with fine points from Sean Kelly 0-2 and Christopher Eastwood. After some good play from John Kinch, Eastwood had an attempt on goal which went narrowly wide.

A few minutes later from a CuChullains kick out the ball was won in midfield and played directly into the forward line where Sean Kelly knocked it in to the path of the on rushing Aidian Power who slotted it low and hard into the corner of the net. As the first half continued CuChullains took hold of the game and seem to be able to pick out players at will, then an incident which ended the game as a contest occurred. Kevin Cott had picked up the breaking ball in his half of the field and as he made his run forward he was caught on the jaw with a late elbow from a TCG player. This incident gave the referee no option but to send the TCG player off and reducing TCG to 14 players. With the extra man CuChullains finished the first half strongly with two amazing points from tight angles from Darren Wynne and Christopher Eastwood and a point from Sean Kelly. At half time the score line read CuChullains 1-6 Tir Chonaill Geals 0-0.

The second half continued just as the first had finished with CuChullains well on top scoring a goal and two points from Christopher Eastwood and a well taken free from Padraig Biggane. CuChullains then made a double substitute with Sean Maloney coming on for Darren Wynne and Mick Galvin coming on for Padraig Biggane. With Sean Maloney’s first touch of the ball he kicked over a fine point.

CuChullains midfield was working well making strong runs and chipping in with a fine point from long range from John Kinch. CuChullains full forward Sean Kelly then went on a scoring spree hitting four points in a row. With the game already won CuChullains then made a further three changes bringing on Christy O Shea, Damian Barker and Paddy O Connor. Christy O Shea had an instant impact on the game with some amazing skill he laid off a pass to Sean Kelly who kicked a fine point. From the TCG kick out they were able to work the ball down the field with pace and accuracy to get their first score of the game which was quickly doubled after winning the kick out and getting a free. CuChullains then closed out the game with a goal from Mick Galvin and a point from Sean Kelly. When the referee blew the final whistle CuChullains won with a score line of 3-15 to 0-2.

Division 2 Hurling League – Saturday 30th May 2009

Cúchulainn Puirseil 2.11 Thomas McCurtains 0.06

The sun was splitting the rocks as this evening game got underway, after the Cuchulainns footballers had just lost badly shortly before. As ever the hurlers had that air of confidence that we always do before these affairs begin.

It wasn’t long, however, before we went a point behind. There was no one covering the “hole” as da fella says. However, we were soon to get into our stride with strikes from Jack Cott and Mick Gorman. If truth be told, we missed a fair few chances as the first half went on – but we were solid at the back with great showings from the likes of man-of-the-match, Martin Dawson, and cool-as-a-cucumber, Con showing the way.

We went in at half-time two points to the good on a scoreline of 0-05 to 0-03.

The second half was tough early on but another score was soon added to stretch the lead to three points. Then after another Cuchulainns attack a 65 was awarded – it was struck over the bar by Jack Cott to stretch the lead further, and although it was struck from 75 yards out, no bonus point was awarded.

Controversy was to enter the game soon after when Dave Meade collected the ball on the sideline and then struck the ball speculatively forward with the flight deceiving the keeper and straight into the net – but was Dave over the line or not was the cry from the opposition – reminiscent of Offaly cries in the 1982 Leinster Hurling final against Kilkenny, when the silver-haired Matt Ruth pulled the ball back from the endline and across the goal for Liam Fennelly to sink the faithful county.

As it did in ’82, the goal stood and Cuchulainns were now in complete command. There were some great performances from the likes of newcomer Vincent Cott, full-forward Mick Gorman (although he’ll want to forget that point-blank miss towards the end), and stalwarts Dave Meade, John Byrne, and Martin Dawson.

In the end another goal was added to the tally and the Cuchulainns finished the victors on a scoreline of Dá Cúl is Aon-Déag Cúilín chuig Sé Cúilín don foireann McCurtains.

Team: Micky Biggane, Gerry Commane, Martin Dawson, Dave Meade, AN Other, Con X, John Murray, Vincent Cott, Mike Dennehy, Padraig Harrington, John Byrne, Jack Cott, Mick Gorman, Pauric Biggane. Subs: Eddie Naughton

Man of the Match: Martin Dawson, solid at full back!
