Division 2 League Champions

The footballers rounded off a sensational year by adding the intermediate league title to the Junior championship and McArdle cup on Saturday in Greenford. They defeated St.Joes on a score line of Cus 0.17 St. Joes 1.05. Yet again this was a magnificent team performance but special mention to Cathal Nicholls and Sean O’Connor who were outstanding on the day. Best wishes are extended to Anthony Tighe and Johnny Kinch who both sustained serious looking injuries during the game.

Dinner Dance

On Saturday night almost 200 Cus Gaels gathered for our 80th anniversary celebration. On the night there were several awards handed out and we also honoured our successful footballers with the presentation of their medals for this year. Hurler of the year went to Tom Brennan, while footballer of the year went to Chris Eastwood (who also picked up the top scorer award). Club man of the year went to the ever popular Mattie Smith-a great winner of this award in our 80th year and a man who embodies everything that is good in our club!

We also paid tribute to the men and women who help run the club, with awards presented to our football coach, football and hurling managers, and club photographer Michaela Biggane. A big thank you goes to the organising committee with special thanks to MCs for the night- Cathal Murtagh and Larry O’Leary. Thanks are also extended to Luke Cleary for the design of the wonderful banner and John Murray for his tireless commitment this year.

In what was difficult playing conditions to say the least Cu Chullains narrowly beat Thomas McCurtains on a scoreline of 0-9 to 0-8.

Cu Chullains can take huge credit for their hard work and never say die attitude in grinding out a result from this game, as we where under serious pressure. Our early pre season training stood by the players well and the effort and commitment off all players must continue for us to have a successful season in what is our clubs 80th year in existence.

The game started fairly even with Cu Chullains playing against the wind in the first half but we adjusted well to the stiff breeze against us. After some good football the first score off the afternoon came from some great play by Charlie Cowley who slotted over with the outside of the boot from 20 metres. Sean Kelly got the second point after some good play by the defence and midfield who worked the ball in direct to Kelly who took on his man and slotted over the bar.

Next up on the score sheet was Danny Denton who found space behind the McCurtains defence and after a fisted pass slotted over a nice point.

The McCurtains only registered 2 points in the opening half and with 2 Chris Eastwood points the teams finished off at the interval 6-2 to CuChullains advantage.

After some positive feedback from the management team of DJ Bradley, Mick Rogers and Cathal Murtagh we took to the field with what we thought would be a slightly easier task as we had the wind behind our backs but this was not the case.

McCurtains started the stronger and kicked over a couple of points with the defence under serious pressure. The one and only Goal chance of the afternoon fell to a maccartains player and with his head bearing down on goal with only the Goal keeper to beat Sean Moloney pulled off a wonder save to keep us with our slim points advantage.
When Cu Chullains managed to get up the field we took our chances well , with Pod Biggane, and calvin registering vital points on the board after hard work through out the team.

We managed to hold on to our one point lead and all the players especially the defensive and midfield unit have to take extra credit as we where under a lot of pressure but hunted the McCurtains players in packs and came out on top.
Lets hope we can continue our good start to the year with victory over our old rivals Dulwich in Thursday Evenings Game.

Cuchulainns v St. Anthonys [2008 Football Lge]

by Cu Chulainns on June 1, 2008

2008 Football League Round 1 – 01/06/08

Cuchulainns 1.09 v. St. Anthonys 1.04

We finally began our league campaign with a game against St. Anthony’s in Greenford on Sunday. Despite starting with 5 regulars missing we dug deep to gain a valuable win. The first half was close throughout and after 15mins St. Anthony’s scored from the penalty spot with what looked like a very dubious decision by an otherwise very good referee.

This gave them a 1.02 to 0.01 lead but within five minutes the game was level after an Eddie McGuigan point and a good goal from Pauric Biggane. We then scored points from Brain Glackin and Kieran Wyne to go in leading by two at the break.

The second half was one-way traffic after the sending off of the St. Anthony’s full back and only way ward shooting kept the scorleine down- we must have hit at least 10 poor second half wides. Points in the second half came from James Stones, Chris Eastwood, John Byrne and Ollie Neary.

Overall this was a very good performance as we were missing five regulars including our two first choice mid-fielders.

Team and Scorers: Eddie N, Gerry C, Ken C, Mike H, Joe S, Padraig H, Ollie N, Brian G, Eddie Mc, Pauric B, John B, Kieran W, David O, James S and Kevin G. Subs- Ralph B for Padraig H and Cripy E for David O. Man of the Match- Kieran Wyne- great display from half-forward!
